The History of the CHOICES Gecko
The Day "Success" was Born

Success In March 2007, this colorful little creature made the transition from thought to reality. It was an effort brought about by dedicated staff from several departments within TCOE. What icon would capture children and suggest an authentic invitation to the after school setting? After a fair amount of creating and discussion, a logo emerged and the gecko was born.

In August 2007, the gecko was unveiled to students across Tulare County at the after school programs. All received it well, yet there was one thing missing - a name! So in February 2007, well over 250 after school students set out to accomplish the special assignment of naming the gecko.

With creativity as their boundary and a nearly blank sheet of paper to fill in, over 250 entries flooded into the Choices After School home office. From first grade through eighth, names from every facet of imagination surfaced, specifically an entry from Choices at Pleasant View Elementary in Poplar.

Gecko Naming Contest Winner Neli Licea, a Pleasant View Elementary second grader, managed to capture that "something" the group of adults who began the process had hoped for. When asked why that was the perfect name, she wrote: "Success is the perfect name because Choices is going to help me be successful. It's fun playing games and it helps me do my homework ... the leaders are helpful and important to me."
