What is Transitional Kindergarten

Kindergarten begins an exciting new chapter in the lives of children and their families and sets the tone for children's social and academic future. With the increasingly academic nature of Kindergarten, some parents are finding that their children are not quite ready for the pace and rigor of the Kindergarten program. These children quite often have a fall birthday. Many school districts offer a Transitional Kindergarten program that will benefit children who need the gift of time to develop socially, emotionally, physically and/or intellectually before entering Kindergarten the following year.

Using California State Standards for Kindergarten, teachers implement developmentally appropriate practices to accommodate various learning styles while integrating experiential "hands on" activities in an engaging setting. This program allows students to develop skills and concepts at their own pace and act as a bridge between a more flexible curriculum and the academic rigor of elementary school.

Transitional Kindergarten is a full day program that follows the schedule of traditional Kindergarten. Enrollment in Transitional Kindergarten is voluntary. Parents who are interested in this program for their child should contact the school where your child will attend.
