Migrant Education Even Start (MEES)


The Migrant Education Even Start (MEES) program is a family education model designed to promote school readiness through the strategies of early childhood education, family literacy and parenting skills. Eligible migrant children, birth to 7 years of age, and their parents are eligible to participate. Priority for participation is given to 3-5 year-olds who lack the preschool experience.

Migrant Education Program Coordination and collaboration with adult education resources is an important component of the MEES program. Parents participate in community/school district ESL, GED, and other adult education programs as available.

Goals
  • To increase parental involvement in the education of their children and to be their children's first teacher.
  • To build school readiness skills.
  • To create a successful transition from home to school.
  • To strengthen language development and literacy among families.
  • To improve skills, attitudes, values, and behavior linked to reading.
  • To develop positive attitudes and good self-concept.
  • To improve parents' job skills and facilitate access to adult education programs.
  • To establish collaborative partnerships with Head Start, Adult Education, Title I, etc. for the provision of services to migrant families.
  • To increase the social significance of literacy in family life.

Early Childhood Education / School Readiness
  • Developmentally appropriate activities and language experiences based on ongoing assessment are used to create a learning environment.
  • Prepares a child for successful transition from home to school.
Parent Education / Literacy
  • Parent as "first teacher".
  • Parenting techniques are modeled.
  • Parenting skills education.
  • Offers opportunities for positive parent/child interaction.
  • Activities provided to encourage parent/child interaction in the home.
  • Information is provided to facilitate families' access to community and educational resources.
  • Encourages utilization of daily routines and the use of household materials to reinforce early childhood skill development.
Adult Education
  • Encourages parents to attend local adult education classes in GED, ESL, and employment skills.

  • Assessment: BRIGANCE PRESCHOOL AND K & 1 SCREEN.
  • Curriculum: "First Teacher" Continuum of Preschool Skills and Home Teaching Activities & Region VIII-developed thematic curriculum.
