Environmental / Outdoor Education - SCICON

The Outdoor Education Program is a one-week summer program within the California Mini-Corps program designed to assist with the education of migrant students. The camp is administered by a Mini-Corps principal. Mini-Corps students serve as the camp instructors.

Program Objectives
  • Provide migrant students the opportunity to experience education outside of the classroom, where they are able to construct meaning that leads to thinking, sharing, exploring, questioning, and developing their own understanding of lessons provided by the instructors.
  • Teach migrant children science concepts in a natural setting that foster an understanding of ecology, plant life, earth science, physical science, etc.
  • Teach migrant children a respect for nature, thus developing an understanding of how nature works and how human beings affect the environment. By teaching migrant students respect for nature, strategies are introduced that further develop their thinking concerning personal expectations, goal setting, and general leadership skills.
  • Increase the number of high-quality teachers working with migrant students by providing an opportunity for future bilingual teachers (Mini-Corps college students) to develop experience and expertise in an outdoor setting.
