Student MedicationsAll student medications are collected and dispensed under the direction of the SCICON nurse. Only asthma inhalers, bee sting kits or other essential medications are allowed to remain with the students. The SCICON nurse dispenses medications as per written instructions from Section II of the SCICON Student Registration Form. Typically, medications are dispensed at breakfast (7:30 a.m.), lunch (12:15 p.m.), dinner (5:30 p.m.) and at the closure of the evening activity (8:30 p.m.). If the written instructions call for another time (e.g., 10:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m.) the medication will be dispensed at that time. Occasionally, another SCICON staff member may need to dispense the medication (under the direction of the SCICON nurse) due to the timing of the medication and the scheduled activity. For example, when a student is scheduled to be on an all day hike, the nurse may direct the Trailguide to dispense the medication. California Education Code requires that written permission from both the parent and the child's physician be obtained before medications are dispensed at school. SCICON, as an official school site for Tulare County Office of Education, falls under this same education code. The SCICON Health Center has as part of our approved health procedures, written physician instructions for dispensing common over-the-counter medications (e.g., Tylenol, Benadryl, etc.,) as described in Section I of the SCICON Student Registration Form. Thus, if you would like your child to be able to receive these medications (if needed) you just need to complete and sign Section I. For ANY OTHER MEDICATION to be dispensed at SCICON (other than those listed in Section I), whether it is a prescription or non-prescription medication, Section I must be completed by the parent or guardian, and Section II must be completed by the child's physician.
