Meeting Areas

View the Campus Map to get an idea of where the meeting areas named below are located.

Indoor Meeting Areas

Listed below are the indoor spaces available for meetings or activities. Rooms can be set up with any combination of long tables or chairs (some restrictions). A dry-erase easel can be set up in any of the meeting areas. "Post-it"® Easel Pads are available for an additional charge. Portable projection screens can be placed in rooms that do not have built-in projection screens. SCICON Conference Center has free, high-speed Wi-Fi in all meeting areas, including outdoor arbors. Laptops are not included in any meeting room.

John Muir Lodge

Wheelchair Accessible The John Muir Lodge is the main dining hall at SCICON. Meeting capacity is limited to 25-30 people if dining hall tables are set up permanently for 250+ people. Tables can be broken down and moved for larger workshops and set up again for meals. In this case, meal and meeting times would need to be well coordinated and workshops must end promptly as scheduled to allow time to reset the room for dining. The lodge includes a built-in projector, screen, audio system and a beautiful stone fireplace.

Porterville Learning Center

The Porterville Learning Center (PLC) is a five-minute walk up a short hill from the John Muir Lodge. The PLC has a comfortable conference room which seats up to 60 people. Large picture windows overlook the SCICON campus. A projection screen and VCR/DVD are available. Restrooms are immediately downstairs.

Blue Oak Classroom at Eagle Point Village

Wheelchair Accessible The Blue Oak meeting area at Eagle Point Village is a spacious, modern conference room that can accommodate up to 100 people. The meeting area can be divided in half with a built-in folding dividing wall. If the dividing wall is used, each meeting area has its own Smartboard, LCD projector and audio-visual equipment. There is also a spacious exterior deck for an outdoor meeting area.

Semi-private Cabins

Each of the semi-private cabins have meeting lounges that can accommodate up to 15 people. Bear Creek Cabin Lounge can accommodate up to 25 people. Staff monitors must be in place since these cabins are also lodging areas, so these areas may not be the best option. Other indoor or outdoor options should be considered first.

Other Indoor Areas

If additional smaller meeting areas are needed, the two Bear Creek Village staff housing areas and the Eagle Point Village staff housing lounge can serve as meeting rooms for up to 10 people. Plenty of advance notice will be needed, as this will involve removing furniture.

Outdoor Meeting Areas

Listed below are the outdoor spaces available for meetings or activities. Naturally, SCICON excels at outdoor possibilities, but keep in mind that spring can bring unpredictable weather.

John Muir Lodge Decks

Wheelchair Accessible The John Muir Lodge is surrounded on the east and west by two large outdoor decks. The West Deck is near Bear Creek and can accommodate one group of up to 50 people or two seperate workshops of up to 30 people each. There is a long bench along the perimeter of the west deck. The East Deck is near the loading/unloading area and restrooms, and can accommodate up to 30 people. Both decks hold multiple picnic tables.

Lions Arbor

The Lions Arbor can accommodate up to 100 people at picnic tables. It is a large, shaded arbor near the meadow/ outdoor recreation field (where tent camping would be set up). Bear Creek is nearby. There is paved vehicle access.

Rotary Arbor

The Rotary Arbor can accommodate up to 50 people at picnic tables. It is a very scenic, shaded arbor located on the walkway from the parking lot and restrooms to John Muir Lodge (about a 3-minute walk to the lodge). Bear Creek is nearby.

Barton Amphitheatre

The Barton Amphitheatre can accommodate up to 100 people with amphitheatre-style seating. Located between Lions Arbor and the parking lot and restrooms, it includes a camp fire area and is not shaded.

Eagle Point Village Blue Oak Arbor

The Blue Oak Arbor in Eagle Point Village can accommodate up to 100 people. It is a large, shaded arbor with lights for nighttime events, limited outdoor cooking facilities, running water, picnic tables and an audio system.

Eagle Point Village Amphitheatre

The Eagle Point Village Amphitheatre can accommodate up to 50 people with amphitheatre-style seating. It includes a camp fire area and lighting, and is not shaded.

Other Outdoor Areas

There are a few additional outdoor areas with picnic tables near the lodge and Bear Creek for small workshops of up to 20 people. These areas are not shaded, and have no electricity or running water. Additionally, there is a small, amphitheatre-style meeting area which can accommodate up to 20 people not far along Soda Springs Trail (along Bear Creek).

Any of the trails can be used as outdoor sites, if desired.
