La Sierra High SchoolLa Sierra High School was established in 2000 and is a state-approved public charter school, governed by the Tulare County Office of Education. La Sierra was created to provide both an academic program leading to a high school diploma, as well as provide vocational training programs for students. La Sierra High School has two campuses: the Military Academy campus at 1735 E. Houston Avenue, Visalia and the Porterville campus at 1414 W. Olive Street, Porterville. In August 2006, La Sierra Jr. Academy opened its doors to students in grades 7 and 8. La Sierra Jr. Academy is located at 1735 E. Houston Avenue in Visalia.
La Sierra offers a variety of different vocational training programs for students in addition to a state-required high school graduation academic program. Students can enroll in Graphic Arts, Printing, Building Trades, Culinary Arts, Hospitality, and Horticulture vocational training programs to assist them in determining a career path and obtaining employment during and after school. Students attending La Sierra have an opportunity to participate in the SEE Youth Employment Program, which provides career guidance, part-time employment during school and full-time employment during summer break and after graduation.
La Sierra offers small classes, hands-on learning and an opportunity to obtain a part-time job while attending school. Credentialed teachers provide the core academic subjects, such as math, reading, writing, history and science, while experienced instructors teach the vocational subjects. Each day consists of academic classes and vocational courses, allowing each student the opportunity to put into practice those concepts taught in the regular high school curriculum. Each vocational course, whether it is the Building Trades, Culinary Arts or Printing, requires students to read, understand and perform critical steps. This type of hands-on learning reinforces the lessons taught in the classroom.
La Sierra High School is available to all high school students who wish to attend and graduate from a new and exciting program.
