The Clemmie Gill School of Science and Conservation

Sixth Grade SCICON (Virtual) Visits

Because the SCICON program is currently unable to welcome students on campus, our naturalists are prepared to provide virtual tours for those schools that had planned visits this fall and schools that had not yet made reservations to visit. These tours will highlight the Museum and Raptor Center, Aquatics, Geology, Forestry, and many other fun and interesting SCICON experiences. Tulare County schools with fifth- and sixth-grade classes are encouraged to arrange virtual lessons while the campus remains closed. Prior to the lesson, the SCICON journal will be delivered to the schools for students to use. In-class visits will begin when conditions allow.

For more information or to schedule a virtual lesson, contact Dianne Shew, SCICON Director, at dshew@tcoe.org.

Bear Creek SCICON is the outdoor school of science and conservation operated by the Tulare County Office of Education. It is located on 1100 acres above Springville. Last year, the school was visited by over 20,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students for a one-day or week-long experience in outdoor education, natural science and conservation. SCICON is a product of over 50 years of school and community involvement. Community support has enabled this state-of-the-art environmental education school to become a model for similar programs throughout the country. SCICON is host to its own natural history museum, raptor center, planetarium and observatory, and tree nursery.

Prominently displayed with the SCICON logo in the lodge is the phrase: 'SCICON is people working together.' This expression illustrates the leadership, vision and systems that underlie the obvious success of SCICON as a 'gold standard' outdoor science school program. SCICON is a place where people care deeply and work hard toward the shared goal of creating a positive social environment for the students while they explore science concepts in the natural world.
