Social-Emotional Learning

What is Social-Emotional Learning?

SEL is for everyone. SEL develops skills like communication | goal setting | empathy | decision-making  so we can build healthy relationships, succeed in schools and workplaces, and contribute to our communities. Click here for information on SEL + MTSS.
SEL is based in science. Hundreds of independent studies show that SEL leads to better academic performance, improved well-being, and safer schools. Click here for research on this and SEL + Academic connections.
SEL brings families, schools, and communities together. The way SEL is implemented in schools and which skills are emphasized are driven by partnerships between families and schools and tailored to the local community’s priorities, cultures, and needs.

The Tulare County Office of Education (TCOE) believes social-emotional learning (SEL) is essential in all learning environments and necessary to create a healthy climate in any organization. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is the foundation of our work. The five SEL competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) are in the middle, the “how” is listed at the bottom of the surrounding rings, and the “context” shows at the top:

Our approach to social-emotional learning centers on the Transformative SEL Competencies linked HERE

Many of our TCOE departments are invested in this work and coordinating efforts around social-emotional learning to support all of our Tulare County kids and educators.
