SCICON’s 5th Grade Day Trips give students an exciting, hands-on introduction to the wonders of nature and the science concepts that bring it to life. Operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, SCICON’s one-day outdoor school experience aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), offering lessons focused on obtaining and combining information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment (5-ESS3 Earth and Human Activity). Students explore the trails with a SCICON trail guide, observe natural habitats, and learn through direct interaction with the environment. Beyond the science, the trip helps students become familiar with SCICON’s campus—viewing cabins, the lodge, and other facilities—so they feel confident and excited for their week-long 6th-grade stay. These trips blend learning with exploration, sparking curiosity while preparing students for future outdoor education adventures.
